The Columbus Blue Jackets fired general manager Jarmo Kekalainen on Thursday, ending his time on the job after more than a decade. President of hockey operations John Davidson made the call midway through Kekalainen’s 11th full season on the job and three weeks before the trade deadline. Davidson and the hockey operations team will assume GM duties on an interim basis until a full-time replacement is hired. Ownership, after Kekalainen and Davidson named Pascal Vincent coach following the Babcock fiasco, said in September there would not be any front office changes at that time. (AP) — A teachers strike in a Boston suburb entered its eighth day Tuesday — one of the longest in recent state history — with both sides still unable to agree on salaries and other issues, and tensions fraying. The school committee proposal addresses union priorities, according to the school committee, including 12 weeks paid parental leave, smaller class sizes and increased social worker support for students. It is illegal for public workers, including school teachers, to strike in Massachusetts. In total, the union now owes $475,000 for the strike that began Jan. 19, according to The Boston Globe. The Newton mother of three — two high schoolers and a student in 8th grade - is asking the court to compel the teachers union to end the strike.

USA Hockey is mandating neck laceration protection for all players under the age of 18, the latest development in the wake of the death of a player in England from a skate cut to the neck. The decision announced Sunday comes three months after American Adam Johnson died after taking a skate blade to the neck during a game in the Elite Ice Hockey League. The International Ice Hockey Federation has since mandated neck guards for players at all levels at the tournaments it runs. The governing body for the sport in the U.S. also said it strongly recommends that adults wear neck protection. “I know throughout our organization, the overwhelming opinion was that the time is appropriate to modify our rules related to neck laceration protection,” USA Hockey executive director Pat Kelleher said.

“Safety is always at the forefront of our conversations and the action of our Congress today reflected that,” said USA Hockey president Mike Trimboli. Days after his death, England Ice Hockey announced all players at all levels would be required to wear approved neck protection starting in January 2024. For USA Hockey, neck laceration protection had previously been recommended but not required for youth hockey players. USA Hockey also “strongly recommends” neck laceration protection for adult players. “I think there is a machismo within ice hockey where you’re seen as being something less if you choose to wear more protective equipment,” ice hockey broadcaster Seth Bennett told CNN Sport in November.

LONDON (AP) — A man who was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut by a skate during a game, was released on bail Wednesday. He was arrested on Tuesday, and released on bail on Wednesday pending further inquiries. Petgrave skates toward Johnson and collides with another Panthers player. CNN —A “crazy amount of emotions” ran through TJ Oshie’s mind as he watched footage of what would be American hockey player Adam Johnson’s final moments on the ice. The English Ice Hockey Association has announced that all players must wear neck guards from the start of next year, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Johnson’s former NHL team, are mandating neck guards for their minor league players, coach Mike Sullivan has said. In the NHL, neck guards – let alone neck coverings of any kind – are not a common sight. “I think there is a machismo within ice hockey where you’re seen as being something less if you choose to wear more protective equipment,” ice hockey broadcaster Seth Bennett tells CNN Sport. Warroad’s neck guards are fitted with Kevlar and steel components, ensuring that they have enough stiffness to stay upright and offer effective coverage around the neck.

CNN —The National Hockey League (NHL) has changed its approach to the use of rainbow-colored stick tape often used to show support for the LGBTQ+ community and inclusion within the game. On Tuesday, the league announced it would now allow players to use products like Pride Tape during practices, warm-ups and games. “After consultation with the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, Players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season,” an NHL statement read. Dermott displayed a small amount of Pride Tape on the handle of his hockey stick on Saturday, becoming the first player to go against the ban. Overview: Forecast or fantasyWe're now at least two years on from when a slew of space companies went public during the SPAC frenzy, and, look, none of them look great. Now a bit further down the road, I want to look at a different financial metric: 2023 revenue projections. I ran an informal series for a while to mark when a space company announced it was going public. The rest of the pack isn't as on the mark: A few companies are roughly halfway to their earlier 2023 revenue projections, or performing even better. Spire forecast 2023 revenue of $227 million and is closing in on about $107 million.

You would think that the architects who designed Vladimir Putin's palace thought of everything. They failed to hide plans showing two elaborate tunnels running beneath the palace complex — plans that any competent state-security apparatus would fight tooth-and-nail to keep secret. The underground complex beneath Putin's palace consists of two separate tunnels connected by an elevator that descends roughly 50 meters below the surface. Gelendzhik is the town closest to the palace complex, a five-hour drive from the resort city of Sochi. Federal government to restore Hockey Canada funding

BRAMPTON, Ontario, April 16 (Reuters) - The Canada government will restore funding to Hockey Canada after the body met three conditions to make the sport safer, said Minister of Sport Pascale St-Onge on Sunday, ahead of the women's ice hockey world championship gold medal game between the United States and Canada. Hockey Canada had its funding frozen last year when the national governing body came under scrutiny over its handling of sexual assault allegations. "Today marks an important milestone for Hockey Canada in our journey to earn and maintain the trust of Canadians," said Hugh Fraser, chair of the Hockey Canada Board of Directors. Hockey Canada must also review and implement the recommendations from the independent governance review led by Thomas Cromwell. CBC reported that Hockey Canada received $7.7 million from Sport Canada in the 2022 fiscal year.

Credit Suisse Group AG’s annual shareholder meeting Tuesday was supposed to be the launchpad for its recovery. Instead, it became the final chapter of its nearly 167-year-old history. Security was tight and check-in was slow for some 1,750 shareholders who showed up at the hockey stadium in the north of Zurich, normally home to concerts and comedians. It was the first Credit Suisse annual meeting held in person since the Covid-19 pandemic took hold in early 2020.
"We cannot push everyone to be an activist, we need to be very careful," Canadian Subban told Reuters. "I'm not saying it is right or wrong to wear the (Pride)jersey, we have just got to be very careful how we push players to do things. Instead the blame lies with the media, says Subban, for only telling half the story. "The people that write the articles, the people that push certain narratives in the media they have to be held accountable," he added. "There's many players in the league that have started programs - why aren't the media talking about that.
